FCT is the national funding agency that supports science, technology and innovation, in all scientific domains, under responsibility of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education. FCT started its activity in August 1997, succeeding the Junta Nacional de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o Cient\u00edfica e Tecnol\u00f3gica<\/em> (JNICT). Founded in 1994, the Centre has evolved its vision and strategy in recent years, expanding its research to address science and societal challenges in ecology, evolution and the environment (the three “E”s in the Centre’s name), enlarging its geographic scope to encompass tropical and insular ecosystems, and embracing new innovative methodologies and collaborative approaches.
