FCT started its activity in August 1997, succeeding the <em>Junta Nacional de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o Cient\u00edfica e Tecnol\u00f3gica<\/em> (JNICT). Since March 2012 FCT has coordinated public policies for the Information and Knowledge Society in Portugal, after the integration of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umic.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knowledge Society Agency-UMIC<\/a>.\u00a0In October 2013, FCT took over the attributions and responsibilities of <em>the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fccn.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Funda\u00e7\u00e3o para a Computa\u00e7\u00e3o Cient\u00edfica Nacional<\/em><\/a> (FCCN), [Foundation for National Scientific Computation].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main research unit and host institution:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biodecon.campus.ciencias.ulisboa.pt\/?page_id=190\">Centro de Filosofia da Ci\u00eancia da Universidade de Lisboa (CFCUL)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Centre for the Philosophy of Science of the University of Lisbon officially started its activities in July 2003 and it is composed of an interdisciplinary team that includes integrated members and collaborators, national and international, with distinct institutional affiliations. The CFCUL develops its activities within six Research Groups, and aims to promote the development of the Philosophy of Science in Portugal by supporting and favouring research in the field of Philosophy of Science, by participating in Research Projects, collaborating with national and international teams, doing research supervision of Post-graduate students, linking research and Post-graduation through the Master and PhD Programs in History and Philosophy of Science of the FCUL, and the Master in Bioethics of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. It publishes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kairos.campus.ciencias.ulisboa.pt\/sobre-a-kairos-2\/?lang=en\">Kairos. Journal of Philosophy &amp; Science<\/a>,\u00a0an open access peer reviewed journal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Principal contractor:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/base-adaptation.eu\/partner\/fundacao-da-faculdade-de-ciencias-da-universidade-de-lisboa-ffcul\">Funda\u00e7\u00e3o da Faculdade de Ci\u00eancias da Universidade de Lisboa (FFC\/FC\/UL)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FFCUL is a private non-profit organization, created in 1993 to provide the Faculty of Sciences (FCUL) with financial\/administrative R&amp;D management. FCUL acts as a third party in all R&amp;D projects based on a scientific agreement in force since FFCUL\u0092s establishment.\u00a0FFCUL contribute significantly to the case studies in WP4; WP5 and WP6. FFCUL is the front institution for a large Portuguese scientific collaboration of multiple research groups, with more than 400 on-going national and international projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participating institution:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.museus.ulisboa.pt\/pt-pt\">Museu Nacional de Hist\u00f3ria Natural e da Ci\u00eancia\u00a0(MUHNAC) \/\u00a0Universidade de Lisboa (UL) (Ulisboa)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Museum of Natural History (Museu Nacional de Hist\u00f3ria Natural), coordinated by the Lisbon University, is one of the biggest museums in Portugal dedicated to natural history, botanic and science. It has many different temporary and permanent exhibition that aim to promote science and the understanding\u00a0of the surrounding world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong>Additional research units:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uib.no\/en\/svt\">Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities, University of Bergen (SVT)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>SVT is a permanent, interdisciplinary and interfaculty institution at the University of Bergen that is responsible for research, teaching and dissemination within the field of &#8220;theory of science&#8221;, understood broadly as &#8220;research on research&#8221;. The research profile of SVT is broad, with a focus on critical reflection over the science-society relationship. The Centre coordinates and participates in several EU\/FP7 and NRC-projects on the ethical and societal aspects of science and technology. SVT is a member of the Norwegian Academic Council for Science and Technology Studies, and teaches &#8220;theory of science&#8221; with ethics in all PhD programmes at UiB.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cba.fc.ul.pt\/index_exp.php\">Centro de Ecologia, Evolu\u00e7\u00e3o e Altera\u00e7\u00f5es Ambientais (CE3C\/FC\/UL), Universidade de Lisboa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (Ce3C), formerly the Centre of Environmental Biology is a large R&amp;D unit based at the Science Faculty of Lisbon University (FCUL). Founded in 1994, the Centre has evolved its vision and strategy in recent years, expanding its research to address science and societal challenges in ecology, evolution and the environment (the three &#8220;E&#8221;s in the Centre&#8217;s name), enlarging its geographic scope to encompass tropical and insular ecosystems, and embracing new innovative methodologies and collaborative approaches. With these changes and the integration of two other research groups (Azorean Biodiversity Group &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gba.uac.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.gba.uac.pt\/<\/a>, and CCIAM &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sim.ul.pt\/cciam\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.sim.ul.pt\/cciam\/<\/a>), the Ce3C now includes 12 research groups nested into four Thematic Lines, all involving internationally recognized investigators. It conducts scientific activity in the domain of natural and environmental sciences, combining fundamental and theoretical research with applied research and services.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mare-centre.pt\/en\">Centro de Ci\u00eancias do Mar e do Ambiente (MARE), Universidade de Lisboa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"banner\" class=\"clearfix\">\n<div id=\"banner-content\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"banner-inside\" class=\"clearfix\">\n<div class=\"region region-banner\">\n<div id=\"block-block-4\" class=\"block block-block clearfix\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p><span class=\"animation fadeIn animation-display\">MARE &#8211; Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre &#8211; is a Centre for research, technological development and innovation, with an integrative and holistic approach, concentrating a wide diversity of expertise, skills, and capabilities, with a nationwide territorial implementation, that develops its activities oriented to societal challenges, in close partnership with national and international research centres.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"animation fadeIn animation-display\">MARE combines expertise allowing approaching scientifically and technologically all types of aquatic systems, from river basins and associated landscapes, to estuaries, coastal and large marine ecosystems, the open-ocean and deep-sea, on a context of global and regional changes and cumulative anthropogenic impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Partner institutions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arglab.ifilnova.pt\/\"><span class=\"s1\">ArgLab,\u00a0IFILNOVA &#8211; Nova Institute of Philosophy, Universidade Nova de Lisboa<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">ArgLab\u00a0is a research\u00a0structure within the larger research-oriented\u00a0Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA)\u00a0at the\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">Universidade Nova de Lisboa<\/span>, Portugal.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ArgLab aims at contributing with original results to the enlightening of important contemporary social problems that can be approached with the tools of Philosophy. Generally speaking, we are concerned with argumentation and decision making processes as far as they can be philosophically approached and thus related with Practical Reason and Values. The particular focus of our research is, then, on\u00a0practical reasoning\u00a0and\u00a0practical argumentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bioisi.ciencias.ulisboa.pt\/\">BIOISI &#8211; Biosystems and Integrative Science Institute, Universidade de Lisboa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioISI is a new institute, merging 3 research centres (BioFIG, CFMC, LabMAg)\u00a0officially created in January 2015 to understand and address biological questions using integrative -Systems- approaches at the forefront of life sciences research at both national and international scales.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/labont.it\/\">LABONT &#8211; Laboratory for Ontology<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The Laboratory for Ontology is a research centre of the Department of Philosophy, University of Torino chaired by Maurizio Ferraris and directed by Tiziana Andina.\u00a0The members of LabOnt are PhD Students and Researchers in\u00a0philosophy with different specializations, including metaphysics, philosophy of language,\u00a0aesthetics, philosophy of the cognitive sciences,\u00a0ethics, and philosophy of arts.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The general research field of LabOnt is ontology, namely the philosophical discipline that aims at providing\u00a0a theory of what exists.
